Liberty Chapel Cemetery - Williana Community - Grant Parish, La (Update)

This update of 1/12/2009 includes new burials and tombstone dates added
since 7/2008. Additional family notes / kinship pairings are added.

Cemetery is located West of Williana on the Old Military Road off
US Hwy 167 adjacent to Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church. The
original road was known as the Claiborne Road and pre-dates the
June 1836 US land survey of this township/range.

Liberty Chapel Cemetery has been in use since 1849 or earlier. Liberty
Chapel Methodist Church has been organized since prior to 1870.

Cemetery is located in Sec 16 T8N R2W; earliest US land deed found for
this area was Thomas F. Swafford in April/1843 for land in Sec 6 T8N R2W
some two miles NW on Saddle Bayou.
List of burial provided by Elva and Ken Maddry, Dry Prong since 2007.

Rapides Parish records note, that on 9/05/1865 the Police Jury appointed
Syndics ( road overseers responsible to organize laborers/maintenance
for parish roads ). For the Claiborne Road North of Alexandria: 19 mile
post to Saddle Bayou - Road District 2 - William Tyson ; Saddle Bayou
to Parish Line (Winn) - Road District 4 - Thomas Swafford.

note more unmarked/unknown burial sites here.

some persons buried here was added from database records. Pairings and
added information is from available records - there may be some errors.

Confederate soldiers:
Cemetery has a Memorial Marker denoting 12 Unknown CSA Veterans who died
during a smallpox epidemic 1862 - 1863. Graves are marked by 12 unmarked
concrete slabs. Were buried in unmarked graves - slabs added later.
